Lenten Study Series
taught by Rev. Dr. John R. Koppitch
The season of Lent (40 days between Ash Wednesday and
Easter, not counting Sundays) is traditionally a time for introspection,
meditation, special spiritual practices.
I am so excited about the book I've selected to teach for
our Lenten study. We will be
reading Unbinding the Gospel by Martha Grace Reese. It's a perfect match for Lenten contemplation and our desire
to bring new people to our church.
Please do not stop reading at this point!
Yeah, I know what some of you are thinking. "Hmmm... 'bring new people to our
church' sounds like a euphemism for evangelism and I want nothing to do with
that."
Well, OK.
You got me. The book is
about evangelism but please do not stop reading at this point! Stay with me for a paragraph or two.
Her book is written from the perspective that most people
would rather get a root canal than think about evangelism. Does that describe you?
Martha Reese defines evangelism as "anything you do
to help another person move closer to a relationship with God, or into a
Christian community."
That's not so bad, is it? Please read on.
This is NOT another slick, heavily-promoted "how to
do it" program instructing us in various strategies and techniques that
none of us would ever feel comfortable doing.
Instead, the class will use the book; scripture,
discussion, and prayer to help each of plumb the depths of our own faith.
Reese will also challenge us to look compassionately at
the people around us. Are they
really doing as well as they let on?
Is it true that they have no need to experience forgiveness,
reconciliation, grace, love, and joy?
Is it really true that they have no need to be a part of something
larger than themselves? Is it
really true that the do not need to know that God has a purpose and will for
their lives?
Reese' bet is that by exploring these things, we will
find our own tongues "unbound," not to preach at others, but to share
in conversations with others.
The class will meet at 7PM on Wednesday evenings, beginning February 24 and continuing through April 7 (the Wednesday after Easter). Jennifer Loeb can get you a copy of the book.
